Can women with regular cycles ovulate during their periods…say cycle day 1-3?

I got on birth control in the first place because I was getting my period every two-three weeks and I needed something to regulate my cycle. However, as of right now, I have had my period for two weeks in a row and I am a little nervous. My friend’s wife got her period two weeks in a row and then she found out she was pregnant. I thought late or no period was a sign of pregnancy… is a double period a sign of pregnancy as well? Should I buy a pregnancy test to make sure? What do you think? Your help would be greatly appreciated for the eased minds of my fiance and me. If you have not missed any pills then pregnancy is unlikely.
