Cham Albanians No they did not help Greece gain its independence fromthe Ottoman Turks, they’ve never sided with Greece for anything. The Arvanites did help the cause. Cham Albanians were and still are Muslims so they sided with the Turks during the conflict. The Arvanites were Orthodox Christians who established a Greek identity so they sided with the Greek cause. Not quite. In the Middle Ages, some people of Albanian origin had come as “immigrants” -sometimes as merceneries at different historic phases – to Greece, and had settled in certain areas throughout Greece. They got so much assimilated into the Greek culture, that they felt totally Greek, and their origin didn’t mean practically anything. They didn’t even know they had Albanian national origin, as we know from historic sources that I can mention if you liek details. In fact, they mostly chose ancient Greek names for their children, at a time when Greeks usually had Christian names. It was they who contributed to the war of Independence from the Ottomans, and not Albanians who remained with an Albanian national identity in Albania – and they fought together WITH the Turks against Greeks.
