Do these instruments violate the intellectual property of Isabel B. Myers?
No. While these instruments also produce the four-letter type code described by Myers, they do so via a totally different design than Myers’ original Indicator (MBTI®). For instance, they don’t use forced choice. Instead, they use differential intensity weighting, which enables the respondent to choose how well an option fits or to choose none of the options. The questions on the instrument were developed empirically, by having people who know their type codes select the most appropriate items. Obviously, this approach was not available to Myers because she created the first Jungian type assessment.
