Does the Department have any preferences with regard to A-level subjects?
One of the A-levels must be in English. We accept English Literature, English Language or the combined English Language & Literature syllabus. In addition to the English A-level, we look for academic ability across a range of other subjects. We look favourably on candidates with a profile balanced more towards the Arts and Humanities. Nonetheless, it is important that candidates choose subjects in which they have a genuine interest, rather than taking them for strategic purposes. Successful applicants in recent years have studied subjects such as History, French, German, Philosophy, Film Studies, Politics and Maths. General Studies does not count as one of the three A-levels.
