Java moss is usually grown as an aquatic [in an aquarium] but it can survive out of water provided it’s kept in a moist or humid environment. Because it’s a moss, it doesn’t reproduce by seeds, but would use spores as its means of reproduction. But trying to grow it this way isn’t very practical. If kept in an aquarium with moderate lighting and warm temperature (76-80o F), with a little aquatic plant fertilizer added occassionally, it will grow at a good rate once it gets past it’s initial period of acclimation. If you grow this, you’ll find to HAVE to trim it back or it will overgrow your tank. You can use the cut ends to grow new sections of the moss. Java moss isn’t something you grow by planting it in the gravel of the tank, though. It should be tied to some wood (driftwood) until it attaches itself to the piece.
