How did UAE, particularly Dubai emerge as a key transshipment point for sea-air cargo routings?
In the early 80s Japan, Hong Kong, China and Taiwan started moving large volumes of goods towards Europe by sea, which continued to increase drastically. During that time experts identified two regions that could function as key transit points- Sri Lanka and the UAE. Location wise Sri Lanka was the ideal place but infrastructure wise UAE was far more advanced. The governments proactive attitude towards infrastructure and business friendly regulations, customs along with its open sky policy helped UAE emerge as an ideal transit destination for sea-air cargo. When we talk about sea-air, which are the major routes? Taiwan was very strong initially and now China, Hong Kong and Indonesia have emerged as big exporters by sea. Generally speaking from all around South East Asia cargo travels by sea to Dubai. From here the cargo moves mostly to European destinations by Air.
