How Do You Teach Adults In Community Colleges?
• Consider your level of competence. You will be educating people who have life experience and probably other types of training. Being able to respond to their questions and concerns means that you need to be confident in your own knowledge. • Give your teaching serious commitment. Be well prepared and consider carefully what aspects of knowledge will be of most benefit for your students. • Be careful about displaying your irritation or frustration. Adults are equals to you and won’t respond well if you show such signs in their presence. Accept that it’s going to be a case of learning from them as much as you teaching, and everything that you learn can go right back into your course to improve it every time. Be aware of adult egos. Sometimes it can be difficult to teach adults who believe that they know more about the subject matter than you. Be patient and let them have their say now and then to help them feel heard.
