How does glucose enter a muscle cell?

Glucose is transported by GLUT4 (a glucose transporter protein) to the plasma membrane of a muscle cell. The hormone insulin on the outside of the cell binds to a receptor on the plasma membrane that sends a signal to increase the amount of GLUT4 on the surface of the cell. This increases the amount of glucose taken from the outside of the cell to the inside.
