How does the cost of living in Denmark compare with that of the UK?
There is no hard and fast rule – it depends on your lifestyle and circumstances. The cost of renting or buying a flat seems reasonable compared to the UK. When I first came here, four years ago, property was booming in London but cheap in Denmark. I did very well out of the move in that respect. Property has boomed in Denmark since then, but still not to the same extent as in the UK. I find that food prices are broadly similar, although junk food seems to cost more (80p for a Twix???). That said, it helps to shop around as there is a surprising difference in prices between different supermarkets. CDs seem a bit pricier, but I just get those on the internet. Earnings… well, I do the same job here as I did in London and my pay is 35% less after tax – partly because the tax is higher, partly because the pay is lower.
