Professional coaching is a distinct service which focuses on an individuals life as it relates to goal setting, outcome creation and personal change management. In an effort to understand what a coach is, it can be helpful to distinguish coaching from other professions that provide personal or organizational support. TherapyCoaching can be distinguished from therapy in a number of ways. First, coaching is a profession that supports personal and professional growth and development based on individual-initiated change in pursuit of specific actionable outcomes. These outcomes are linked to personal or professional success. Coaching is forward moving and future focused. Therapy, on the other hand, deals with healing pain, dysfunction and conflict within an individual or a relationship between two or more individuals.

It is impossible to find two coaches who provide the same intervention for the same issue. There is currently no Scope of Practice for Coaching.

However, Coaches who provide intervention for "disruptive physicians" begin with an Emotional Intelligence Assessment followed by skill enhancement is the areas in which the physician scored in the deficit range. There is a curriculum with workbooks, exercises, DVDs, CDs and a Post Test designed to determine the success or lack of success for each coach.

This provides for an evidenced based practice.

While Dr. Anderson is correct when he says that there is no Scope for Coahing, one way a Client can be assured a more professional and ethical expeince with their Coaching is to look at the qualificaions and training of their potential Coach.  Where did they trian in Coaching?  What model do they use? Are they certified via the ICF or IAC? There are many different models, training compaies and "schools".  But along with life lessons, this training helps to guarentee that the Coach is, indeed, Coaching and not counselling, teaching, lecturing or using such strategies as shame, anger, judgments in order to move the Client forward.
