How is SI joint disruption and dysfunction diagnosed?
SI joint disruption and dysfunction is challenging to diagnose because it can mimic and/or co-exist with different spine problems such as a slipped or degenerated disc, or the hips. However, your doctor can compare findings from your physical examination, x-rays, CT scans, or MRI as well as perform a diagnostic spinal injection. The injection is performed using fluoroscopic or CT guidance to verify accurate needle placement into the SI joint. If your symptoms are decreased significantly, it may be concluded that the SI joint is either the source or a major contributor to your low back pain.2 Once SI joint disruption and dysfunction is confirmed as the source of your symptoms, treatment can begin. Many patients respond favorably to physical therapy, chiropractic manipulation, oral medications, and/or injection therapy. However in some cases these treatments are less effective over time. In those instances, surgical fixation/ fusion with iFuse Implants may be recommended.
