How is the trucking industry organized?
The trucking industry is made up of thousands of companies, many of them small and family-owned. The industry is divided into several categories: Truck fleets that carry freight for other companies (for-hire trucking) make up about 60 percent of the industry. The rest is made up of private trucking, where a company owns and operates its own fleet (e.g. retail or resource firms); small, independent owner-operators; and couriers, who carry small-package freight.
