How is underwater archaeology conducted?
For years, researchers have used SCUBA diving to study submerged archaeological sites up to a few hundred feed deep. The Institute for Exploration (IFE) and the Center for Ocean Exploration (COE) at the University of Rhode Island have been pioneers in the use of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to conduct archaeological research in much deeper waters. IFE works closely with members of the academic community to assure that our work conforms to high standards for archaeological research. We adhere to Archaeological Standards developed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Our work is also subject to laws and permitting of various coastal states when operating in their national waters.
