How long do mosquitoes live?

0

It depends on a bunch of things. Male mosquitoes generally live a week or so and don’t go very far from the site where they were born. Females – the bloodsuckers – live anywhere from three weeks to two or three months and will travel several miles looking for a blood meal. Temperature, humidity, the food supply and the season of the year are all factors in the lifespan. During her life, a female will lay several hundred eggs in batches of 50 or 100 or so. I know that the second full moon in the same month is called a blue moon. What about the second new moon in a month? What is that called? Not much of anything as far as I can tell. The odds of two new moons in the same month are the same as the odds for two full moons. However, since the new moon isn’t as showy as a full moon, it usually goes unnoticed and doesn’t seem to have any special name. I did determine that the Wiccans call the second new moon the black moon.

There are four stages to a mosquitoes live. These are egg, larval, pupa and adult. The total time it takes for a mosquito to go through all four stages depends greatly on both temperature and species. In a typically warm weather, the life cycle takes 14 days or less, but it can vary from 4 to 30 days.

Mosquitoes are relatively fragile insects with an adult life span that lasts about 2 weeks on average, depending on species. The vast majority meets a violent end by serving as food for predators, or are killed by the effects of wind, rain or drought. The mosquito species that only have a single generation each year are longer lived and may persist in small numbers for as long as 2-3 months if environmental conditions are favorable. Mosquitoes that hibernate in the adult stage live for 6-8 months but spend most of that time in a state of torpor (hibernation). Some of the mosquito species found in arctic regions enter hibernation twice and take more than a year to complete their life cycle.
