How much of my gift goes for services versus administrative costs?
United Way takes pride in operating with maximum efficiency and effectiveness. We work hard to keep the cost of fund raising to a minimum so more donor dollars go for services. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) recommends that non-program service expenses not exceed 35% of total expenses. We are proud to say that for the 2008-2009 campaign year, our overhead is 18.54 percent. Over the course of our current Five-Year Plan, we will continue to reduce our overhead rate, while still providing the community leadership that San Diegans have come to expect from us.

United Way has a multi-prolonged commitment that includes but is not limited to: (1) raising more money, (2) raising more undesignated money, and (3) providing more programmatic services to the community. By accomplishing these goals, United Way will, over time, be able to continue to reduce this rate.
