How often do medicine teams admit?
Medicine teams accept admissions on their long call, short call, and medium call days. The short call team takes admissions until 1pm and the medium team until 6:00pm. The long call team admits until 8pm. Essentially this means that medicine teams admit 3 out of 5 days with no H&Ps done on pre and post-call days. Pre-call teams may receive already admitted “holdovers” from the overnight resident night float to “decompress” the short, medium and long call teams. This system allows us to keep admissions evenly distributed, thereby avoiding exceeding patient “caps”. Specialty teams admit patients on a daily basis, but no one admits when post-call.
