How secure are the residence halls?
The exterior doors to JB and St. Joe’s Halls are locked from 8pm to 8am. Interior doors to the living areas are locked on a 24 hour basis. A call box is provided at the entrance of JB and St. Joe’s Halls so that visitors may call the student they are visiting and be escorted into the living areas. Public Safety Officers patrol the campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week and may be contacted by cell phone. In addition, two residence staff members are on duty nightly starting at 8:00 PM in the lobby offices of JB Hall and St. Joe’s Hall.
A. All residence halls remain locked at all times. Students must use their Centre ID cards to gain access to any of the residence halls. If a student’s ID card is lost or stolen, the student should report it to the Department of Public Safety immediately, and the card will be deactivated so that it can no longer be used to enter residence halls or obtain meals on campus. Replacement ID cards are made in the Student Life Office located on the first floor of the Breeze House, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Students are encouraged to lock their doors when they are gone and not to prop any exterior doors open.
All residence halls have exterior doors that are locked 24 hours a day and the students residing in that particular building have keys for the exterior door. ICs guest policy also states that guests are to be escorted at all times. Also, there is a security staff on campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week that can be contacted. All residence halls have RAs that are on duty from 8 p.m.-7 a.m. every night. They are in contact with RAs in other buildings and an on-call Hall Director. There is great communication between all of the staffs and with Security throughout the night.
There are a number of measures in place to provide a safe living environment for our students. The front doors of all residence halls are guarded by a card access system. The front desks of all residence halls are staffed 24 hours a day. All visitors must check-in at the front desk and be escorted at all times. Security cameras are installed in all residence halls and are monitored by front desk staff. Sprinklers and smoke detectors are in place in all halls. Students are encouraged to lock their doors when they are gone and not to prop any exterior doors open.
The Police Department is located in Curran Hall, first floor. Police officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The front desk of the residence hall is staffed 24 hours a day. The bottom level entrance of the residence halls can be accessed Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. After 6:00 p.m. all students and guests must enter by the 3rd floor entrance. Exits other then the main entrance/exit are locked from the inside and are alarmed. It is also the responsibility of the residents of Frances Warde and Dougherty Halls to maintain a secure living environment. ID is required at all times to gain entrance to the residence hall. The intent of this policy is to maintain maximum security in the residence hall.
