Is it law to wear a helmet whilst on a bicycle in the UK?

there is no legal requirement to wear a cycle helmet in the UK at present. There is alot of discussion as to whether they are worthwhile and it is entirely up to the individual’s choice to wear or not wear one. I have tried to find a competition where helmets are not compulsory and have failed. As a result I always wear a helmet as I reason that if they are compulsory for pro riders then that’s good enough for me. After all I only have one head! I am in nursing and looked after a 24 year old guy who was a very up and coming IT tech but who fell off his bike and is now unable to do anything for himself. He was not wearing a helmet as he was only travelling a mile or so (he usually wore one)!
