Is Luxembourg culture going to take a great leap forward?
Luxembourg and Sibiu are the two European cultural capitals for 2007. Luc Caregari fears that this will not add much to Luxembourg’s cultural scene, contrary to the one previously organised in the country in 1995. “In this whole circus, it is they [the artists] who are the least taken into account. One specificity of artistic management in general, and particularly in 2007, is talk of organisation, schemes, collaborations and synergy, to the point of almost forgetting the contents. The artists themselves are somewhat reduced to giving contents to what politicians have decided on. It is interesting to observe the different reactions of the artistic world to the bustle of the cultural year. Mostly accepting the financial windfall, they are lead to behave like opportunists. … Cultural years, for Luxembourg at least, have something Maoist about them: it is question of taking a great leap forward. And if this theory seems to have worked in 1995, we cannot be sure that history can repeat i
