Answer Hi John, A horse is no different from any other athlete when it comes to training. As with a human, the idea is to get the body into the right condition to perform at the highest level. With a thoroughbred this is acheived with a balance of exercise, diet and conditioning. Exercise begins with miles of ‘work’ either over farmland or around the track. Gradually the distance increases until the horse is fit. Then conditioning comes into play. If the horse is a sprinter then it has sprint training, usually concentrating on the last 800/600 meters. Distance horses need slightly different training as they need to be able to maintain a good pace through the early part of the race and then produce a fast finish. The need both aerobic and anaerobic training. While this is going on the trainer the trainer will be ajusting the diet, making sure the horse is getting a balanced diet suitable for the work it needs to do.
