Please Help: Potty Training a Chihuahua (Indoors)?
You should look into useing pee pads, they have a scent on them that let the puppy know they need to pee there. 4-months-old is still young for potty training. I will send you some potty training tips, instead of “outside” use pee pads. I use a crate* to potty train with, but only for potty training and then I break it down and store it. I put blankets and a small food and water dish in the crate. Dogs don’t potty where they eat and sleep. When they are first little, I only expect them to hold their potty for 4 hours, and then 6 hours, then 8 hours and so on. So when they are first little, I set a timer or alarm clock to wake myself up at night to take them out. I only allow my puppy in the bedroom* or the living room, only one room at a time. They have to graduate to more space. If I allow them to have full run of the house, it will overwhelm them. I take them out the same door each time. I tie a dinner bell to the door handle. Do not use a jingle bell as they could get their toe caug
Pick one specific place to put the news papers so he knows that is where he is supposed to go. Give him treats when he goes there. Use the same phrase each time you put him on the paper “Go Potty” or something like that – keep saying it, if he does it – give him a treat. If you catch him going to the bathroom somewhere else, pick him up and rush him to the spot you want him to go. You might have to bring him to that spot every 2-3 hours and say “Go Potty” or whatever phrase you’d like to use until he gets the hang of it. You can’t just expect him to know where to go – you need to bring him to it.
