Yes, on January 11, 1951, Mashriqi was arrested prior to the elections under the Punjab Public Safety Act. This was to prevent him from promoting candidates of the Islam League (which was founded by Mashriqi). It is unfortunate that political opponents were not tolerated and democracy in Pakistan was crushed right from the nations very start. If the judiciary had been made independent from the initial years of independence, Mashriqi would not have been arrested for no reason. It is unfortunate that our founding fathers didnt setup the foundation for a clean and strong democratic system.
