4. Abraham Lincoln offered Houston 50,000 troops and a Major General’s commission if he would try to keep Texas in the Union. Houston, staunchly pro-union, considered this but ultimately decided that he could not take up arms against his fellow Texans. However, he refused to swear allegiance to the Confederacy, choosing instead to be removed from office as Governor and forced into retirement and (in Southern eyes) disgrace.
