According to USA Today, a similar incident in occurred in Thailand in 2004. The pet food was contaminated with industrial chemicals, linked to kidney failure, and affected more than 6,000 dogs and a “smaller number” of cats throughout Asia in 2004. A comment by a Korean graduate student at Georgia’s Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory helped crack the 2007 US case. The student noted the similarities between the disease outbreaks in 2004 and 2007 that led to scientists reviewing tissue samples and chemical components to track the cause of the food contaminations and illnesses.
