What are neutralizing antibodies?
The body’s immune system can develop an immune response to foreign substances such as viruses, bacteria, and an injected medication. This results in the production of antibodies whose only job is to label a specific foreign substance for destruction by the immune system. Sometimes man-made interferon beta is recognized as a foreign substance. If this happens, antibodies can latch onto the interferon key and not allow it to fit into the receptor. If that happens, the interferon may not be able to do its job, which may result in decreased efficacy. The clinical significance of neutralizing antibodies is unknown.
