Discrimination in the workplace takes many forms, and generally includes unfair treatment in hiring, firing, promoting, pay, job training, advancement opportunities, as well as being subjected to a “hostile work environment” because of the employee’s being in a “protected category.” A “hostile work environment” generally means that an employee is treated differently by managers and co-workers. Discrimination also occurs when an employer applies its policies, procedures, and terms and conditions of employment differently with employees in “protected categories” than its other employees.
