I have several friends and relatives (some elderly, some are youngsters in their 50s). Most have gone very well. A few had problems. In my opinion, the patient needs to do everything they can to make it be a success. The factors are health, weight, desire to make it work and the surgeon doing the surgery (look to the doctor that the doctors go to themselves). Lose the weight well before the surgery. This will help with the patient who has diabetes as well. Understand, that it is going to hurt and the best way to insure a proper healing is to follow the directions of the PT and doctor. If the patient slacks off because it hurts to do the physical therapy the healing is going to take longer and may not heal properly. Don’t overdo it. I know someone who was bragging how they outdid all the other patients in therapy and ended up setting the healing process back as a result.
