Yes, you can make up your own data types for handle values to define the syntax and semantics of the value data, and the types can be any UTF8 string. The set of types basic to system operation are described in RFC 3651, Section 3.2. If you make up your own data types, there is the potential for conflicts for handle clients that encounter types that are not recognized across the user community. To avoid this, the 0.TYPE prefix has been created as a registry for known types; however, policy for how types should be defined and used is currently under discussion.
