What are the different types of realism in visual art?
Quite a few: Neoclassical realism, late 18th century (for example J. L. David) leading to Academic Realism in the 19th century (in Germany Adolph Menzel for example) Magic Realism is another name for the “Neue Sachlichkeit” at style of the 1920s (for example Franz Radziwill, Alexander Kanoldt) American Realism of the first half of the 20th Century (Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe) Socialist Realism developed in the 1930s in Stalinist Russia, spreading through Socialist Europe and China until the 1970s New Realism / Nouveau Réalisme developed in Europe, mainly FRance, in the early 1960s (Arman, César, Tingulely) Photorealism developed in the second half of the 20th century (Chuck Close, Richard Estes) During the 20th century, realism and abstraction were the decisive opposites in visual art (the “great real” vs. the “great abstract”). This opposition still has repercussions today, and during the last years, realist art seems to have gained more influence again.
