What are the main beliefs of Taoism?
Taoism isn’t so much about beliefs as it is just living a certain way — simply, and in accordance with nature. Even leaders of nations are advised to not meddle and to let things take their natural course. An important symbol in Taoism is the Uncarved Block … which represents the ideal form, in that it hasn’t been corrupted by ideas and concepts. It’s that original form that Taoism encourages people to return to. Part of getting there is to practice Wu-Wei … effortless action. You do things efficiently, simply, and without pretense, without calling attention to yourself. You do what needs to be done, and then you blend into the background and stop interfering. Sounds easy, but our egos want recognition for the things we do. We want to show off and be noticed. According to Taoism, acting that way is the opposite of enlightenment. Another part of the practice is the concept of Yin and Yang, the two black and white swirls you’ve probably seen in the circular symbol. The idea is that
