What are the “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon?
This refers to a pop culture phenomenum that consists in a “game” in which the participants are given a name of an actor or actress and must link such artist to Kevin Bacon by mentioning a film or chain of films that have the common thread of actors appearing in it. For example: -Julia Roberts Appeared in “Flatliners”, Kevin Bacon did too so there’s just one degree. This is a take on the common belief that all people in the world are connected or know each other by no more than “six degrees of separation” and makes an amusing comment on the large number of films Kevin Bacon has appeared in. A case could be made for many other actors or actresses with a larger body of work than Kevin Bacon and thus more easily attainable links. The Kevin Bacon version however is by far the most popular.
It’s an amazingly entertaining game, in which you name anyone in the film industry, and trace them back to Kevin Bacon in six steps, or “degrees” or less. Example: Danny Devito was in Batman Returns with Christopher Walken who was in “Catch Me If You Can” with Tom Hanks who costarred in Apollo 13 with KEVIN BACON. Degrees of separation: 3.
