It is definately not dry bushings (steering stops) or whatever the 2nd guy said. More than likely, it is your upper spring seats. The seats on these volvos (s40, v40) are weak and do have a life expectancy of somewhere between 45k-60k miles. Replacement can be costly, around $600 for both sides at my shop, but they are necessary. Have the car checked out quickly, because bad seats can cause the struts to go out prematurely, and that can be much more expensive to fix. FYI, it could also be the front stabillizer links but rarely do they make a ‘crunching’ noise (normally just a rattle over bumps) and the control arms and bushings wouldn’t cause that noise.
