What factors contribute to effective communication?
For a start you need to know your audience: after all ‘the meaning of the message is in the mind of the receiver’. So you need to know how the audience is likely to interpret your message. You also need to have a clear purpose: very often the message is received but the purpose is not and then nothing, or the wrong thing gets done and this can be costly. What are the objectives of business communication? Business is about money but it is also about relationships and about trust. Messages need to be clear, not confusing as confusion leads to doubt and later mistrust. No-one wants to be ‘reading between the lines’ in business: the clearer and more cordial the communication the better. Having the right amount of information is also of key importance – we can save so much time and so many headaches by checking that all the essential information is contained in the message. What is communication by objectives? As I mentioned earlier knowing your audience and your desired purpose is a MUST.
