What is a door knocker anyway?
A door knocker is an item of door furniture that allows people outside a house to alert those inside to their presence. A door knocker has a part fixed to the door, and a part (usually metal) attached to it by a hinge that may be lifted and used to strike a plate fitted to the door, or the door itself, making a noise.It’s fun to think of different types of door knockers and what they might have represented in olden times. They were symbols of wealth, religion, and contemporary art. Lion heads and gargoyles were, and still are very popular door knockers. Today, door knockers reflect our hobbies, interests, and personalities as much as any home decor or entryway item.
