What is a lathe?
A lathe is the machine which both holds and rotates the wood while the turner works. It generally comprises a headstock, which has pulleys to vary the speed of the rotating work, and a central spindle mounted on bearings, which drives the work round; a tailstock, which is not powered but acts as a second anchor for the work in “between centres” turning; the bed (called the ways in North America) which is the frame of the lathe, holding everything rigid to prevent vibration; and the toolrest, on which the turner rests the cutting tool during use.
