What is age related macular degeneration (ARMD)?
Age related macular degeneration (ARMD) is the area of the eye that allows you to see fine details. It is a degenerative condition associated with the eye’s aging. Patients afflicted with ARMD typically have changes in the circulation of the retina which is located in the back of the eye. There are two general types of ARMD recognized by eye specialists: “dry” ARMD and “wet” ARMD. The “dry” form of ARMD usually causes gradual vision loss and is more common than wet. Wet ARMD is more serious and can lead to severe visual loss. ARMD reduces central vision and makes close activities difficult or impossible. While there is no cure for ARMD, scientific studies show that patients taking vitamins high in antioxidants, zinc, and lutein have a better chance of retaining their macular health.
