What is ATM Skimming?

ATM Skimming is a fraudulent activity that is caused by a device that is placed on an actual ATM by criminals. Criminals may use the same materials and colors as the original ATM to create a container that is placed on the face of the ATM machine. The skimmer is usually placed on the machine with a Velcro strip. It is shaped to fit on the ATM but inside is an actual small laptop computer used to scan your personal information. It then prompts our customers with a touch-screen instead of a keypad. The ATM has a card reader in the device as well. There are two types of ATM skimming devices, one that interfaces with the ATM operation and one that does not interface with the ATM operation. The skimmers that interface the ATM’s operation are easier to detect because even though our customer inserts their card, it’s not the ATM that is actually being used.
