What is fusion?

Fusion is the process that powers the sun and the stars. In one type of this reaction, two atoms of hydrogen combine together, or fuse, to form an atom of helium. In the process some of the mass of the hydrogen is converted into energy. The easiest fusion reaction to make happen combines deuterium (or “heavy hydrogen”) with tritium (or “heavy-heavy hydrogen”) to make helium and a neutron. Deuterium is plentifully available in ordinary water. Tritium can be produced by combining the fusion neutron with the abundant light metal lithium. Thus fusion has the potential to be an inexhaustible source of energy. Hydrogen gas is typically heated to very high temperatures (100 million degrees or more) to give the atoms sufficient energy to fuse. In the process the gas becomes ionized, forming a plasma. If this plasma is held together (i.e. confined) long enough, then the sheer number of fusion reactions may produce more energy than what’s required to heat the gas, generating excess energy that c

FUSION is the annual Desire2Learn Users Conference. Once a year, every July, Desire2Learn invites clients from around the world to attend a three day users conference. The conference is attended by system administrators, instructors, technical support and help desk staff and institutional administrative staff from K-12, Higher Education, Corporate, Government institutions. Conference sessions are presented by Desire2Learn staff and by Desire2Learn clients. There are a variety of session tracks aimed at specific audience needs. For example the Teaching and Learning offers sessions that would likely offer the greatest appeal to instructors. Many sessions are hands-on to enable the participants to actively participate in their learning. A two and half day post conference program offers training designed for varying levels of Desire2Learn technology experience. Fusion is combining the nuclei of light elements to form a heavier element. This is a nuclear reaction and results in the release of large amounts of energy! In a fusion reaction, the total mass of the resultant nuclei is slightly less than the total mass of the original particles. An example can be seen in the Deuterium-Tritium Fusion Reaction.
