G6PD is known as Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase – it is an enzyme that catalyzes the converstion of Glucose-6-Phosphate to 6-Phosophogluconolactone. If you know your Glycolysis cycle, you should easily recognize Glucose-6-Phosphate…however, G6PD steers it towards an alternate glucose breakdown pathway: the penthose phosphate pathway. This pathway occurs in the cytosol of the cell, and it’s main purpose of the production of NADPH to be used by a variety of cells.
