With the most popular high definition television signal standard, the signal is made up of 1,080 scan lines. It has over two million pixels (the small dots that create the picture.) With twice as many scan lines and pixels, the HDTV picture has a higher resolution, meaning it is clearer, crisper and more detailed than the Standard Television signal. The shape of the screen is wider a 16 by 9 aspect ratio which simply means it is 16 units wide by 9 units tall. This is much like the shape of the screen you see in a movie theater. Many people find viewing HDTV more natural, because the 16 by 9 aspect ratio closely matches the peripheral vision range of the human eye. HDTV signals are delivered by a digital transmission method. Antietam HD offers the HDTV signal delivered digitally.

HDTV stands for High Definition Television. HDTV is a standard under the digital television umbrella. HDTV televisions display image resolutions of either 720p x 1280 or 1080i x 1920 and are capable of receiving, reproducing and outputting Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. All HDTV television screens must possess an aspect ratio of 16:9.

A High Definition Television (HDTV) is a type of Digital Television (DTV) that receives and/or displays high definition television images and surround sound. HDTV programming and TVs together provide a detailed, sharper image due to the increased number of pixels contained in the received digital. HDTV screens are wider than the traditional analog TV screens. Analog TVs offer a screen aspect ratio of 4:3 while HDTV’s offer an aspect ratio of 16:9, which is similar to a movie screen. This allows you to see movies as they were filmed without reformatting. There are also HDTV capable sets that have the regular TV 4:3 ratio, but format HD content in a letterbox presentation (with black bars on the top and bottom of the TV image). Enhanced Definition Televisions (EDTV) also exists. These 4:3 aspect ratio TVs can not receive HD formatted signals. They can receive enhanced definition signals, which do not have the detail of an HD signal, but do improve on the standard definition (SD) picture.

HDTV is high-definition television, a television picture format made possible by digital broadcasting, or DTV. HDTV offers viewers images with six times the resolution of traditional television images and crystal-clear digital sound. Digital broadcasts use the same amount of bandwidth (6 megahertz) as used in the current analog system, but the efficiencies of DTV allow for the transmission of more information than the analog system. This translates into higher quality in picture and sound, and more flexibility in programming.
