Strictly speaking, insulated glass is a misnomer. What the term implies is that there are two or more panes of glass separated by insulation at the edges and air in the center to provide greater thermal efficiency to a window.

Technically, there are two or more panes of glass separated by insulation at the edges and air in the center to provide greater thermal efficiency to a window.

Insulated glass consists of two pieces of glass sealed to a spacer. This creates an insulated air space between the two pieces of glass, resulting in better thermal performance. Insulated glass also reduces condensation while keeping the heat in during the winter, and heat out during the summer.

Insulated glass, also sometimes called double-pane, is made in “units” which consist of two (sometime three) panes of glass separated by spacers, and sealed with tough synthetic sealants. The air inside is either left in place, removed or replaced with a gas. If the seal goes bad, you will see condensation inside the unit. At that point, you will know that the insulating value of the glass has been lost, and the condensation will increasingly obscure your view through the glass. The unit must then be replaced. Insulated glass can be made with internal muntins, the grid that makes the opening look as though it has multiple panes of glass.
