The word Kinesiology means “the Science of Movement”. Kinesiological information is applied in such fields as physical therapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, exercise physiology, kinesiotherapy, massage therapy, ergonomics, physical education and athletic coaching. The approach of these applications can be therapeutic, preventive, or performance enhancing. Applied Kinesiology Applied Kinesiology is the application of Kinesiology for therapeutic purposes. It was developed by Dr. George J. Goodheart, an American chiropractor in 1964. Applied Kinesiology evaluates structural, chemical and mental aspects of health using manual muscle testing with other standard methods of diagnosis. An applied kinesiology practitioner will assess the muscles in the patient’s body and if any muscle is unbalanced, he or she will attempt to determine why that muscle is not functioning properly. Kinesiology is another name for muscle testing. Kinesiology was discovered in the 1960’s by George Goodheart, a chiropractor who developed a system in which the muscles and surrounding nerves are manipulated to alleviate ordinary aches and pains and also to diagnose and treat organic diseases. He discovered that there was a relationship with the meridians and major organs in addition to the muscles. Goodheart called his system Applied Kinesiology. After these powerful initial applications, kinesiology has continued to expand over the years to test many areas of the body as well as how the body is affected by food and other substances. Kinesiology is also used to determine how well one handles emotional, mental and spiritual stress. Other healers like Dr. John Diamond and Therapist Dr. Roger Callahan applied kinesiology to determine a person’s belief systems, and to help shift negative beliefs to positive ones. Callahan’s information was synthesized by Gary Craig and called EFT (Emotion

Kinesiology is the study of the various disciplines that encompass the movement of the human body. Kinesiology may either be pure or applied. Pure kinesiology seeks to understand human movement in order to analyze problems and come up with treatments for these problems. Applied kinesiology is a specific method to treat these problems. Kinesiology is not a single discipline. Rather, it is an umbrella class of study which covers many different disciplines. The primary focuses of kinesiology are human physiology, biomechanics, and anatomy. A study of kinesiology may also cover the psychology, philosophy, ecology, and even sociology of sports and exercise. This means that while studying kinesiology, a student will get a broad understanding of most things that can relate to human movement. By studying anatomy, the student of kinesiology learns about the various parts of the human body — where bones are, where muscles attach, the locations of organs, and other locative information.
