What is Pilates and it’s history?
In the 1920’s Joseph Pilates founded a form of exercise he named Contrology now commonly known as Pilates. The focus of this method is to re-balance the biomechanical structural within the body to avoid wear and tear of the joints by maintaining good posture, strength and flexibility. This is achieved through use of controlled and precise movements in order to re-align the body’s posture. Specific muscle groups are targeted and strengthened to improve the body’s core stability whilst others are lengthened and released. Joseph Pilates message was about harmony and he believed that the philosophy behind good heath was a life style balance; that it is very much a mind-body technique. This included, diet, fresh air, skin brushing as well as exercise, however he wasn’t puritanical and also liked to enjoy the good life. His advice was to exercise for about 20 minutes a day, four times a week. Pilates is commonly used in rehabilitation, as it is a very effective aid in recovery from injury. O
