What is PTU?
Propylthiouracil (PTU) is a drug used to treat Graves’ disease, an overactive thyroid condition. PTU has been used since 1969, however not until 2009 did the FDA inform healthcare professionals that there could be a risk of serious liver damage from the use of this drug. Numerous cases of serious injuries and even death resulted from PTU, especially in the first six months of use. Sadly, many of the complications are to children, who apparently are much more at risk of being affected with liver damage than adults. Five to ten children die each year from complications of this drug. Liver damage in both children and adults cause severe consequences. The quality of life of someone with a damaged liver is affected for the rest of their life. Often, liver transplants are the only solution to overcome the damage.
