In European travel terms you go from the middle of nowhere into the middle of nowhere. Both are smallish cities, so no means of transport will serve that without changing a few times. The cheapest thing is to try and get a ride share, modern day hitchhiking. Do this search regularly in the weeks before you want to go: http://www.carpooling.co.uk/cars… You should be able to find someone that goes from one of the bigger German cities to Maribor or someone close to Magdeburg to Ljubljana. That would both cover the biggest part of your journey for as cheap as it gets. That option requires flexibility and some sense of adventure though. Not for everyone. Train will be expensive (difficult to tell online how much exactly), require changing at least twice and take 15h+ so it is not a good option but possibly the only plannable, reliable one.
