Sidewalks and trails are designed for pedestrians. A pathway is a facility that is designed to accommodate multiple types of users (pedestrians, bicyclists, rollerbladers, etc.) and therefore it requires a greater width, roadway separation, and gentler slope, than does a sidewalk. These widths are dictated by Federal, State, and Municipal guidelines. AASHTO requires two-way multi-use pathways to be separated from the road by 5’. The separation aids in keeping bicycle traffic from traveling into the opposing roadway traffic and provides an area where snow can be stored. Without this separation, the pathway is considered a sidewalk.
