When you defragment your hard drive, the computer rearrange the fragmented data of files scattered throughout the drive into a sequential and aligned data which correspond to a particular file. “Compacting” is the act of regrouping the scattered data, while “coalescing” makes the data aligned. Those actions are done simultaneously in the defragmentation process.
