Basically, they are large circulating areas of relatively low pressure (diameter measured in miles) that are slow moving and cause massive amounts of wind and water damage. Whether they are considered hurricanes or typhoons depends upon their location (the website explains this), but I can’t tell you if the direction of circulation is affected by the “coriolis effect” or not. A twister, dust devil, water spout and tornado are the the same thing in varying degrees and location (water spouts being tornadoes over water).
