What is the EPA and DHA Content of Natunola Flax?
Natunola Flax is high in ALA, an Omega-3 fatty acid. For example, Natunola Omega-3 Flax 70 contains approximately 31% Omega-3 (batch analysis only). ALA is converted into EPA and DHA in humans. ALA functions as the precursor for EPA and DHA. Some studies suggest that ALA, in addition to DHA, is required for the growth and development of the retina and brain in infants. As quoted in Dr. Diane Morris’ book “Flax – A Health and Nutrition Primer”, “the conversion of ALA to EPA is usually described as limited and somewhat slow in humans…there is great variability in the conversion rate reported by researchers, with one estimate as high as 6% converted to EPA and one as low as 0.2% converted. The 30-fold difference between these conversion rates reflects key differences in the studies’ methods and underscores the need for more research to resolve the issue of how much ALA is converted to longer-chain omega-3 fatty acids in humans.” ALA conversion to EPA and DHA is also affected by diet.
