What is the fastest speed recorded in car racing history?

I stand to be corrected but as far as I know the highest speed ever recorded during a motorRACING ( as opposed to land-speed records attempts and the likes) event took place in 1989 during the Le Mans 24 hours on the old “Hunaudieres” straight which was about 6 kilometres long before they put the two chicanes in 1990. The Peugeot-powered WM recorded a top speed of 405 kilometres per hour at some point during the race. The car was not competitive and had indeed been designed solely to break the 400km/ per hour barrier for the first time in motoracing history at the expense of road-handling over a whole lap. The whole thing was intended to attract publicity towards WM’ s backers. The team also claimed to have in fact recorded a top speed of 420 km/hour during an untimed practice session.
